1991 GMC Syclone

In 1991, GMC introduced the Syclone — a high-performance compact pickup that redefined expectations of what a truck could be. The Syclone was engineered for speed, handling, and everyday usability, all wrapped in a discreet exterior.

At its core, the Syclone features a 4.3-liter LB4 V6 engine fitted with a Mitsubishi TD06-17C turbocharger and Garrett intercooler. Paired with a 4-speed 4L60 automatic transmission and a full-time AWD system with a 35/65 front-to-rear torque split, it delivers impressive acceleration and road-holding capability. Factory tests recorded 0–60 mph times as low as 4.3 seconds — a figure that exceeded contemporary sports cars of the era.

Though it retained its Sonoma-based pickup architecture, the Syclone was outfitted with upgraded suspension components, performance brakes sourced from the Corvette, and a lowered ride height. It also included a sport interior with individual bucket seats and a center console — uncommon for pickups of its time.

Limited to just 2,995 units, the Syclone is a rare example of a factory-built sport truck that combined practicality with performance, making it one of the most unique entries in American automotive history.
